Background information
Laser skin rejuvenation has been evolving over the past 10 years. As technology has improved, lasers have been used to treat more and more different types of skin conditions. In addition, treatments that previously required a large amount of "downtime" are now able to be done with less down time.
The first laser for skin rejuvenation was the carbon dioxide, or CO2 laser. Developed in 1996, it led to a revolution in how lasers were viewed by physicians. In skilled hands, it resulted in a reduction in texture, sun damage, age spots, and fine lines. However, it did require one month of time for the wounds to heal, and it did require people to stay out of the sun for at least 3 months.
The Erbium laser, developed in 1998 addressed the issue of significant time off work by changing the frequency of light used. However, it often required multiple treatments and there were still issues with wound care. It was very effective in the hands of a skilled practitioner.
In the early 2000’s, many new technologies for skin rejuvenations were developed. These are also extremely effective, and require no down time. However, they often take multiple treatments. As such, results are often very good, but certainly not as impressive as the CO2 laser.
This year, Cutera has introduced the Pearl™. A laser that combines aggressive rejuvenation of the skin, with minimal downtime. Most people will need to take 4-5 days off work after a treatment. Results are noticed about a month after their 2nd treatment.
Spa Lumina is proud to be one of the first clinics in Canada to have this laser, due to the luminary status of our medical director, Dr. Gandhi
How does it work?
The Pearl™ uses a unique new type of laser to gently treat the surface of the skin. Their laser gently heats the damaged surface of your skin, and in so doing, will cause the gradual elimination of many of the damaged parts of your skin.
The unique properties of the Pearl™ result in it also heating up the layers just underneath the surface of the skin. This results in the collagen layer being stimulated. Heating at this level will result in the texture of your skin improving with time, and a smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles will occur.
What should I expect?
Not all skin types are suitable for the Pearl™. Initially, you will have a half hour consultation with our medical director, Dr. Gandhi. He will review your skin tone, textures and your expectations to ensure the Pearl™ is right for you. When you arrive for the Pearl™ treatment, our nurse will apply a very thin layer of a numbing cream called Betacaine. This will stay on for 30 minutes. This will reduce discomfort for you. Afterwards, she will wash your face to remove all the residue from your face.
Dr. Gandhi will then personally perform the procedure (at Spa Lumina, only Dr. Gandhi will perform the Pearl™. This will take less than thirty minutes. Your skin will appear red, and have the appearance of a mild sunburn. Over the next 3-4 days, there will be a mild burning sensation on your face (most people describe this as a "2" on the scale of 1-10), and you will have peeling of the damaged part of your skin. Most people start to notice results after 2-3 weeks. Most people need 2-3 treatments to get optimal results.
The Pearl™ can also be used in combination with other light based treatments, to give even better results, and help rejuvenate your skin dramatically. For information on our new combination packages, click here.
