Background information
In recent years, there have been many advances in the treatment of excess body fat and cellulite. Unfortunately, many of these advances have not undergone appropriate testing.
What is cellulite?
Quite simply, fatty tissue or even simpler, FAT. It sounds less offensive when we call it cellulite. Generally when women speak of cellulite, they are referring to the dimpled skin on their thighs, stomach and buttocks. In the case of cellulite, there is comfort with numbers as 80% of women will develop some degree of cellulite past puberty.
Underneath our skin we have a network of fibres that hold fat cells together. This layer acts as an insulation for our deeper organs. When this network of collagen fibres weakens it results in fat cells being trapped within the network creating a dimpled appearance on the outside layer of the skin.
Who gets cellulite?
Factors such as hormones, pregnancy, and aging may all attribute to the weakening of the collagen fibers to increase the appearance of cellulite. People with thicker skin have less cellulite, as the fibrous bands are stronger. Smokers will develop cellulite more than non-smokers. As the body ages, the skin becomes thinner and thus more prone to developing cellulite. Genetics plays an undisputed role.

How do I treat cellulite?
There are treatments that will reduce the appearance of it and keep it under control. There are also treatments that will reduce the actual number of fat cells in the body, to help with this. However, if you don’t follow a healthy diet in the future, your fat cells will grow again.
There are five basic rules to keeping cellulite in control:
- Eat a healthy diet
- Quit smoking
- Avoid diet pills and diuretics
- Exercise
- Manage stress

What is body contouring?
Many people, even when they exercise regularly, will have stubborn areas of fat that simply will not go away. Common areas include the sides of the abdomen (love handles), the front of the abdomen, and in women in particular, hips and thighs. Body Contouring refers to using technology to remove fat from these areas and reduce the size of these unsightly regions of fat.
It is important to know that this is NOT a weight loss technique. For weight loss, you will have to eat less and exercise regularly. However, these techniques can provide a boost to people who are embarking on a journey of weight loss, and provide some positive re-enforcement.
Turning to technology
Mesotherapy has been used in Europe for decades and has shown tremendous success, if used properly and with the right compounds. There are many different compounds that can be used. Dr. Gandhi has researched many of these, and has come up with a combination that is safe and effective.
How do these techniques work?
Mesotherapy requires a series of injections into the fatty areas of concern. Clients are asked to come a half-hour before their treatment. At this point, a topical freezing agent is applied to the skin where the injections go. At Spa Lumina, we use the smallest needle available to inject the mesotherapy solution. This, along with the freezing, greatly minimizes the pain in the areas of concern. The solution works gradually over the next two weeks. A series of 10 treatments is often required for the best results.
Importantly, there is NO DOWN time. Some people do have some mild soreness of the treated area, so it is suggested that people refrain from strenuous physical activity for 48 hours after the treatment.
